Did you know your favorite jeans can get that perfect fade and soft feel with a lighter footprint on our planet? The secret lies in the stone washing process, a stage of denim production that has long been overlooked. Join us at Denim After the Loom, where we’ll discuss the environmental impact of stone washing and understand cleaner and smarter ways to achieve those authentic finishes.
Why Eco-Friendly Stone Washing is the Need of the Hour
In the 1970s, stone washing started as a way to mimic the natural wear of vintage jeans. By washing denim with pumice stones, manufacturers created soft, faded effects that customers loved. But the reality is that traditional pumice delivers a heavy environmental toll:
- Water Usage: A single mid‑sized plant can use millions of liters of water each month to rinse out stone fragments and chemicals.
- Toxic Sludge: The pumice breaks down into fine sludge that ends up in wastewater and eventually harms rivers and soils.
- Energy Costs: Heating large volumes of water and running heavy machinery for hours increases carbon emissions.
At Baytech-HMS, we believe there’s a better way. Our Hand Made Stone—made from recycled materials—achieves the same fades and abrasions but leaves no sludge, uses less water, and cuts energy consumption.
By throwing light on this overlooked process, we aim to prove that style and sustainability can coexist. Our May 7th event, “Denim After the Loom: The Hidden Impact of Stone Washing,” showcases this promise with expert-led talks, live demos, and hands-on workshops.

Spotlight on Our Speakers
Adriano Goldschmied
Often called the “Godfather of Denim,” Adriano founded iconic brands like Diesel, Replay, and AG, and was instrumental in the development of stonewashing alongside Edwin and François Girbaud. Through his company Genious Group, he has designed for Tom Ford, Chloé, and OVS.
After decades of pioneering denim innovation, Adriano is now creating groundbreaking collections using HMS technology. His adept expertise and forward‑thinking vision make him the perfect voice to guide our conversation about revolutionizing denim’s most environmentally damaging stage.
In His Own Words
“With HMS, we got amazing results even in light washes which has been impossible to achieve with other sustainable options.”
Mohsin Sajid
Mohsin’s expertise spans education at Central Saint Martins (CSM), Royal College of Art (RCA), and Kingston University, along with design and consultancy for some of the industry’s biggest names. His deep grasp of traditional denim craft and cutting‑edge wash techniques makes him the perfect guide to reimagine the washing process—the most environmentally taxing stage of denim production.
In His Own Words
“HMS has been one of the most exciting companies in recent years to come from a mind of younger generation entering the denim world. What Beyza has achieved is remarkable, from using waste to create a product that resonates with so many young designers. We have used HMS pens and moons on many of our denim university projects – from UAL: Central St Martins, Kingston University to UAL: London College of Fashion. Many students ask me how’s the best way I create washing and abrasion effects in denim – I say, have you heard of HMS pens?”
Leanne Jae
With an incredible fusion of technical mastery and creative vision, Leanne has guided brands around the globe toward more responsible production methods. Her work in denim R&D, global consultancy, and circular design underscores real‑world impact and meaningful education.
Now, she’s chosen HMS as the only washing solution that meets her rigorous sustainability standards, proving that authentic denim finishes and eco‑responsibility can go hand in hand.
In Her Own Words
“In my pursuit of innovative solutions, we discovered HMS profile and Beyza. I was impressed by their family-run business, which presented compelling research and data supporting their alternative to traditional pumice stones. Having experienced the effectiveness of HMS stones firsthand and witnessed their data-driven results, I now actively use their stones in washing and their pens are sold in Blackhorse Lane stores. My ongoing post-purchase relationship fosters mutual growth and allows me to collectively educate others towards better practices.”
Federico Barengo
Through his brand Garment Workshop, Federico combines upcycling, craftsmanship, and storytelling with a modern, sustainable edge. Now, he’s chosen to collaborate with HMS, creating stone‑washed designs that marry authenticity with environmental responsibility. His hands‑on approach and creativity reflect the future of conscious fashion.
In His Own Words
“HMS is truly at the forefront of sustainability in the world of denim washing and finishes. It’s a company that genuinely inspires me to create better, planet-friendly garments for our jeans collection.”
