Who are you ?
》I am Beyza Baykan. I live in Turkey but I’ve been studying in the US since the junior year of high school. I’m currently studying Applied and Computational Mathematics at the University of Southern California (Fight On!!) I have recently launched my sustainable denim washing stone company, HMS, to create environmentally sustainable solutions in the denim industry while providing our clients with the best effects on their denim: less water, energy, residue, time, effort.

A short description of your career
》I study Mathematics to be able to manipulate and interpret data because I believe big data is the future! I have done quite a few volunteering and internships so far : Research Analyst at The Institute for the Study of War , Treasury at BASF & Marketing at Sizigi. Thanks to all of these experiences, I have built a strong skill set that is helping me to establish the HMS brand.

How could you help other « Women in Denim »?
》I believe in the power of social media to drive change. Whenever I come across a post that exposes some of women in denim faces, I share it on my company profile’s story. I also attend virtual women in denim events & show my support through comments. Additionally, I like to create alliances & discuss the newest sustainable denim solutions with the fellow women in denim. As I am new to the industry, I always seek advice & mentorship from the experienced women in denim.

How do you imagine your professional future?
》 I hope to make HMS grow as a brand and to be in every denim laundry mill in the world! Then I want to come up with new sustainable solutions for the denim production process. I also see myself starting a non-profit organization. Hoping it will be bringing transparency, circularity, and an environment-over-profits mentality to the fashion industry.
